sweet old Uncle Mike 2
There is something ineffably sweet about Michael Gira (the most important of the Swans) writing goofball songs for the children of his friends. He used to live in probably the deepest, blackest hole in music, and now he singing about doing the monster dance and making silly rhymes about little girls keeping their rooms clean. I will yield to noöne when it comes to love for the Swans, but I like the new Michael better.

I love Michael Gira in every way, from the angriest, earliest Swans to his current mellow guy-and-guitar moments. That said, I do get a little cheesed out by some of the goofiest songs like the “Simon” song on Other People, but I’ll listen to it anyway, because his voice makes me melt, and everything he does is special. (Can you tell I’m a TOTAL FAN OR WHAT?)
Those songs hit sort of a weird midway spot for me; the songs on I am Singing to You From My Room feel less self-conscious and more at ease than some of the more personal songs on Other People. “Simon is Stronger Than Us” has an edge to it that makes it a little creepy; I think that’s part of what I like about it.
